Companies and organizations use consulting services
to analyze and solve problems and improve their operation.
The role of the consultant is to analyze the
problems, recommend adapted solutions and support their implementation : growth
strategy, development of a market or business opportunities, positioning, sale,
transfer, restructuring, change management ... etc. . The final objective of
the consultant is to improve the client's performance, thanks to the
contribution of his external perspective.
An advisory mission must: specify the content of the
analysis to be carried out, indicate the deadlines in which the mission must be
carried out, mention a commitment by the client to provide the necessary
documents to the provider so that he can accomplish his mission in the
conditions and on time. This mission includes legal provisions such as the
provider's confidentiality undertaking and a clause prohibiting or authorizing
subcontracting by the service provider.
The consulting professions cover all areas of
economic activity and are practiced in large firms, but also in smaller
structures up to independent status.
The analytical work and the purpose can vary
considerably depending on the strategic level and the objectives. But in any
case, it is a profession that requires excellent analytical skills, experience,
rigor, autonomy, listening skills and a certain sense of leadership . A taste
also for creativity and innovation. Do not be afraid to hit internal brakes
(the famous "resistance to change").
Each consulting mission requires a rigorous
methodology:
- The consultant first spends time on the field and meets with the company's teams.
- He exchanges and organizes interviews and thus collects all relevant information.
- He then proceeds to the analysis of the solutions and their stakes, then on the drafting of recommendations.
- It finally formulates conclusions that can (or not) lead to actions.
